This letter is written in response to a letter written by Timothy Williams in reference to the Plano Independent School District counseling program. Williams' letter refers to a presentation I made at a recent school board meeting.
Williams used the term "universal counseling" to describe the program in Plano. The use of that term is an inaccurate description of the school counseling program used here.
Terminology used in reference to educational programs can sometimes be confusing. Williams might have been referring to classroom guidance lessons which teach children citizenship skills. This is not the same as counseling, which occurs in small groups and individually and is available to students with particular needs. One of the goals of the Plano ISD strategic states that "each student will demonstrate positive citizenship and character."
Schools address this goal in many different ways. The teaching of such traits as honesty, courtesy, respect for self and others, patriotism and responsibility are addressed by both teachers and counselors through structured classroom activities. Suggested activities and materials are listed in the district guidance plan which was developed by a task force of parents, community members, counselors and administrators and approved by the school board in August 1993.
"Counseling" is responding to particular needs of students that may interfere with their ability to learn. Because the educational success of a child depends on the teamwork of parents and school staff members, it is important that parents know about counseling sessions and give permission for their children to attend. Information is sent home about the goals of the meetings, which may center around topics such as improving study skills, managing change, or adjusting to a new school.
Plano ISD school counselors are dedicated, caring, committed educators whose goal is to assist each student to gain the skills which will allow him to graduate and meet the challenges of a changing world. Parents are welcome to discuss their school's counseling program.
Texas Public School Week, Feb. 26-Mar. 1, is an excellent time to visit with your school counselor as you are visiting at open house with your child's teachers. As director of counseling and student services for the district, I will be glad to answer questions about the district counseling program. We want everyone to have accurate facts and information about all Plano ISD programs.
